  • Concerning Rand Al'Thor

    • GENERAL OBSERVATIONS ABOUT RAND'S FUTURE

      • [Vol.1] Min's viewings include Rand and an iron hand.  Well . . . the name of the last King of Aridhol (Shadar Logoth) was Balwen Ironhand.  We know Paidan Fain is not through with his intended corruption of the Two Rivers.  He said he would destroy it as Aridhol was destroyed.  As Rand becomes less human, he can be more easily corrupted.  Perhaps Fain will somehow turn Rand into a version of that greedy king.
      • [Vol.4] The Aelfin told Rand "if you would live, you must die," and they also mentioned something about cleansing saidin; clearing the rubble before rebuilding.  But what was the third question that Rand sought in the doorway ter'angreal?
      • [Vol.6, p.435 pb] The Wise Ones dreamt of an unseen man with a dagger at Rand's throat.  If taken literally, "unseen" implies that this man is either a shapechanging gholam or a Gray Man.  If taken figuratively, of course, the man could be Mazrim Taim, Paidan Fain, or name-a-Forsaken.
      • [Vol.6] Tinkers were massacred in Cairhien, and this unfinished message was found: "Tell the Dragon Reborn. . . ."  The Tinkers were probably killed by Shaido Aiel, sent by the same Forsaken who sent a group of Shaido to kill Mat while he was marching toward Tear and Illian with his Band of the Red Hand.  The bloody message could be a warning from the Shadow, or perhaps it was left by a dying Tinker who wanted Rand to know what had happened.  Will the mystery ever be solved?
      • [Vol.6] Egwene dreams of Rand breaking cuendillar Seals under his boots.  Might this mean that Rand will re-open the Bore?  There is a theory that the old Seals need to be broken so that fresh new ones can seal the Bore.
      • [Vol.9, 10] Now that Rand has cleansed saidin and agreed to meet with the High Lady Suroth and the Daughter of Nine Moons, he has a few major pitfalls to watch out for.  We know the male a'dam is in the hands of Suroth, who is a powerful Darkfriend.  Anath is probably Semirhage.  The Daughter of Nine Moons is off gallavanting with Mat, so she's M.I.A., so of course good old Suroth lied to Rand.  On top of that, Egwene had a few recent and rather urgent prophetic dreams that the Seanchan will attack the White Tower.  I think this adds up to a theory:  Rand will be captured by the Seanchan, collared, and used.
But Suroth and Anath are not the only dangers he has looming over him.  Lanfear aka Cyndane is still around, and she is homicidally pissed-off.  There is a pack of fifty Darkhounds heading south, and they could be heading toward Rand, if not Mat.  And let's not forget the Darkfriend plot around Elayne.  It seems obvious that the Lady Shiane and Daved Hanlon want to use her for bait to lure Rand.  But what are they waiting for; her queenhood, or her babies?  And who do they serve?  Since Moridin is top dog now, my guess is that they serve him, and his aim is to turn Rand to the Shadow.

    • RAND'S FUTURE FAMILY

      • [Vol.4] The heir to the Lion Throne, Tigraine (Shaiel), was Rand's birth mother, which means that Rand has a royal blood tie to the Throne of Andor.
      • [Vol.6, p.529 pb] Lady Elenia put Rand's fears about inbreeding to rest, explaining that Morgase and Tigraine were very distantly related.
      • [Vol.9] According to Min, Elayne is pregnant with a twin son and daughter.  Aviendha will bear four healthy quadruplets for Rand, although there will be something strange about them.  As if having quadruplets isn't strange enough.  I predict that Elayne's plan of hinting that Daved Hanlon is the father of her children will seriously backfire.
      • [Vol.10] One of The Wheel of Time themes is that history repeats itself.  Maybe Rand will murder Elayne, Aviendha, Min, and all of their progeny, just as Lews Therin murdered Ilyena and all of his kin.

    • RAND AS A WARDER

      • [Vol.6] As a Warder, Rand is in danger of dying if Alanna, Elayne, Aviendha, or Min dies, assuming that stipulation applies to Warders who can channel.  Shouldn't he place higher priority on protecting them?
      • [Vol.9] Min Farshaw and Birgitte are unable to mask or soften the Warder bond.  Is this because they can't channel?  Yet Elyas Macheras can mask his bond with Rina.
      • [Vol.9] Alanna Mosvani does not know who else bonded Rand.  She thinks it was only one woman.  Elayne may be in trouble when the White Tower finds out.  Then again, Alanna may get in trouble for bonding Rand against his will.
      • [Vol.9, 10] Min spoke of a viewing in Far Madding to Rand that "Alanna and four other Aes Sedai" would be "in the palm of his hand."  This needs no theory.  In fact, based on Min's viewing, Rand is finally using Alanna and the other Aes Sedai who swore fealty to him to help damp down the various rebellions in Tear, Cairhien, and Illian.  Yay!  A smart move on Rand's part!

    • RAND DIVIDING THE LANDS

      • [Vol.6, p.435 pb] The Wise Ones dreamt of Rand cutting the wetlands in half with his sword.  There is also a Dragon prophecy that mentions him "binding" lands together.  I think this is obviously a prediction of the impact of the Seanchan invasion.
      • [Vol.6, p.353 pb] The (runaway) novice Nicola Treehill had a Foretelling.  Part of it said: "The great battle done, but the world not done with battle.  The land divided by the return, and the guardians balance the servants."  This seems to indicate that after Tarmon Gai'don, Rand's continent will be split in half by the Seanchan invasion, with the south owned by Seanchan and the north owned by natives.  Asha'man (guardians) and Aes Sedai (servants) might attain equal footing with each other.

    • RAND BEING ABSENT-MINDED

      • [Vol.7] After Dumai's Wells, Rand noticed that his fat man angreal went missing.  Since then, Rand has completely forgotten about it.  Who has it now?  Mazrim Taim could make himself as powerful as Rand if he uses that thing.
      • [Vol.8] Lanfear used the Mask of Mirrors to become Keille.  Rand himself can do it.  Perhaps Mazrim Taim is one of the Forsaken (Demandred) using this same trick.  Why hasn't Rand even considered this possibility?  Is he blinded by stress?
      • [Vol.9] When Rand and Lan walked into the trap in Far Madding that Paidan Fain (and his henchman Toram Riatin) set up, why didn't they allow Nynaeve to aid them with her belt "well" of saidar?   Although they thought they were going to kill Gedwyn and Torval, Nynaeve could have bound any quarry with the One Power.

    • RAND'S SICKNESS

      • [Vol.6] Min has begun to see a sickly aura around Rand.  Is this his impending madness, the wound in his side, his channeling sickness, or his slow loss of humanity due to traveling in tel'aran'rhiod and making himself emotionless?  Or is it all of the above?
      • [Vol.6] While locked in the chest by Elaida's delegation, Rand begins to see swirling, dizzying colors every time he thinks of Mat or Perrin.  But Mat and Perrin are also seeing the colors, so this probably has something to do with ta'veren and Tarmon Gai'don, not Rand's sickness.
      • [Vol.8, 9, 10] Rand feels nauseous and dizzy whenever he channels.  His illness seems worse after the cleansing of saidin, and he is still hearing Lews Therin.  So why is he still sick/ insane?  Perhaps it's a result of his two never-healing wounds.

    • RAND AS A CORPSE, AND RAND ON A BOAT

      • Rand/ Lews Therin is going to die.  The prophecies say it, Min viewed it, and the Aelfin agreed.  But death is not always final in the WoT.  Ishamael once told Lews Therin that the Dark One could bring Ilyena back.  If the Lord of the Grave has that much power, I guess Rand has another shot at life after he dies . . . if he defeats the Dark One, that is.  Or if he agrees to serve the Dark One.  Nahahah!
      • The Arthurian legend, one of Robert Jordan's influences, involves three women mourning the death of King Arthur on a boat.
      • [Vol.1] Min views Rand on a funeral bier with three women over him.  Currently, the most likely candidates for these women, of course, would be Min, Elayne, and Aviendha.
      • When Egwene Skims, her choice of conveyence is a platform shaped like a boat.  Perhaps the funeral boat will be a skimming device like this.
      • [Vol.6, p.353 pb] The novice Nicola Treehill (currently a runaway) had a Foretelling:  "The lion sword, the dedicated spear, she who sees beyond.  Three on the boat, and he who is dead yet lives.  The great battle done, but the world not done with battle.  The land divided by the return, and the guardians balance the servants.  The future teeters on the edge of a blade."
Okay.  If we go by wording alone, the lion sword could be defined as Elayne, Birgitte, Gawyn, or Rand.  But we're talking about three women in a boat, so it must be Elayne or Birgitte.  Although Birgitte is the defender of the future Queen of Andor, Elayne is Rand's lover.  Neither woman weilds a sword.
The dedicated spear is probably Aviendha.
She who sees beyond could be Min or Egwene, based on wording alone, but Min has a unique ability whereas dreamwalking is an ability common to more than a few people.
He who is dead yet lives could be either Rand or Mat.  I vote Rand, as he is the one involved in these prophecies.
The land divided by the return must refer to the Seanchan invasion.
The guardians are probably Asha'man, whose name means "guardians."  The servants would be Aes Sedai.  If they are balanced, we can guess the Black Tower will equal the White Tower in strength and/or numbers.
The edge of a blade may refer to Rand's multiple personalities duking it out, or perhaps the Black Tower and White Tower duking it out.
      • [Vol.6, p.435 pb] The Aiel Wise Ones dreamt of Rand on a boat with three women.

    • RAND, LEWS THERIN, AND THE BLINDFOLDED BEGGAR

      • Rand and Lews Therin share a soul.  Now their minds are merging.  Do they actually share one mind with differing memories?  What does this rebirth mean, exactly?  What connects Rand, Lews Therin, and the mysterious "third" in the Lace of Ages?  Are Rand and Lews Therin both a reincarnation of a hero from the First Age?
      • [Vol.1] Min views Rand as a beggar.  He's spent some time playing a flute for meals and shelter, but that isn't quite begging, so this future is yet to come.
      • [Vol.3] Verin read a poem about the masks of the Dark One, which stated that humanity would require "a Lie as a shield."  Might this have something to do with Rand becoming the beggar, or adopting a mask?
      • [Vol.4, p.882 pb] Perrin dreamt of Rand with his eyes bandaged.
      • [Vol.5, p.98 pb] Rand has a dim memory of Ilyena, and dismisses it as his imagination, unaware that this is the first instance of Lews Therin's personality emerging.
      • [Vol.7] Min views that Rand and another will merge, and one of them will die.  She also sees a third, blurry face.
      • [Vol.8] Moridin (Ishamael) was in a bit of a snit about an ancient game he was playing from the Age of Legends.  The most important game piece, the Fisher, is carved to look like a blindfolded beggar with a bleeding wound in his side.  Not even the Forsaken can remember the origin of the Fisher piece.
      • [Vol.8] Egwene dreamt of Rand wearing many masks, and one of the masks becoming real.  Does "many" mean three:  Lews Therin, Rand, and the blurry third?
      • [Vol.9] Rand begins to see a third, blurry face, especially during his channeling sickness.  Lews Therin mentioned "you, me, and the other" during one of his rants, and "the three of us" another time.
