DAREDEVIL
directed by Mark Steven Johnson; (2003)

   Film Rating:

Everything about this story and film seemed formulaic to me.  Let me forestall you before you say, "Well, you obviously don't like comic book adaptations."  Au contraire.  I really enjoyed X-Men, and I plan to see the sequel on opening night.  I also liked Spider-Man.  The problem with Daredevil was that it never surprised me.  It assumed that the audience knew all the comic book cliches, so it skipped over explanations such as how toxic waste would naturally bestow enchanced senses upon young Matt Murdock, or why Matt Murdock would suddenly be driven to create and wear a tight red leather superhero outfit.  Where did he learn to sew -- from his boxing legend father?  Or did he have it specially manufactured at the local superhero costume store?

Sure, who cares . . . well, these sorts of things scream LAZY FILM-MAKING to me!  Most members of the audience don't care about those little details, but there are a few, like me, who prefer to see creative plot development instead of the same old thing with slightly different fight sequences, costumes, and special FX.

If you're watching the film for action, or for the nifty rain-sight special FX, then you'll be pleased.  The fight sequences were extremely well planned, choreographed, and executed.  Ben Affleck pulled off the blind-man / super-hero role, although his hairstylist had questionable taste.  Jennifer Garner outshone him as Elektra, the heiress who can defend herself in superhero fashion.  I was highly entertained by the bad guys, played by Michael Clarke Duncan and Colin Farrell
