   AMÉLIE
directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet; (2001, French)

   Film Rating:

Using narration and visual creativity alongside superb acting and cinematography, the story of Amélie unfolds as a romantic comedy with the heavier undertones of a drama.  Her Parisian world is a beautiful and magical one, despite its modern urban setting.  The cast of characters are interesting and intriguing, despite their ordinary careers.  You won't see any of the stereotypes that Hollywood likes to spice a script with.

This is a film which will remind you that storytelling is an art, not a formula.  The story of shy-girl-meets-boy has been told before, but seldom is a film so grounded in real life while managing all the flourish of a fairytale.  I have to admit that I much prefer science fiction and action films to romance or drama, but this one was well worth seeing.  The humor will hold anyone in their seat until the end.  Enjoy!
